Hologic expands innovation impact in Costa Rica with opening of trailblazing Cybersecurity Operations Center
Alajuela, Costa Rica, June 12, 2024. —
Hologic, Inc. —a global medical technology leader that improves women's health through early detection and treatment— today expands its innovation impact in the country with the opening of its Cybersecurity Operations Center (SOC). The hub, which will serve as the company's primary cyber incident response command center, is the first of its kind for Costa Rica’s
life sciences sector.
The SOC is an integral part of the
Global Information Technology (IT) Shared Services Center. It will monitor, detect and respond to cyber threats that may affect Hologic, its employees, clients and other strategic partners. It also will ensure compliance with regulations, protect critical assets and maintain stakeholders’ trust in the company.
These operations will take place on the same Hologic Costa Rica campus located in the
Coyol Free Zone of Alajuela. Hologic’s presence in Costa Rica started with a medical device manufacturing focus that has broadened to encompass gynecologic and breast health, then grew with the creation of an international Financial Shared Services Center and now expands further with the global IT services. Altogether, Hologic employs about 1,100 people in the country.
“In addition to Hologic’s valuable experience obtained with other operations in the country, our company
selected Costa Rica as the headquarters of the SOC due to the talented workforce and the investment that the government makes in continuing education programs on cybersecurity. Apart from Costa Rica’s proximity to the United States, where our company's headquarters are located, this strategic hub allows us to respond effectively to the dynamic cyber threat landscape and align cybersecurity efforts with the business goals of the company,” said Paul Malenchini, Hologic’s Chief Information Officer.
Hologic’s Global IT Shared Services Center currently has 34 team members, including those from the SOC. The company intends to add 40 more professionals who have experience in areas like cybersecurity, infrastructure, IT support, process automation and IT commercial.
“The opening of Hologic’s Cybersecurity Operations Center represents a milestone for Costa Rica and reinforces its positioning as a location for high-innovation foreign direct investment. This hub shows the growth and synergy of such important high-tech sectors as life sciences and technology services. The company is one of the pioneer leaders in both industries in our country, adding now this project of high value and complexity:
cybersecurity, climbing an additional step in sophistication in the
services area. Today, Hologic adds thousands of jobs in Costa Rica in its manufacturing plant, Financial Shared Services Center and now, in its cybersecurity operation. This clearly illustrates the potential of diversifying processes in the
reinvestments companies make in Costa Rica, which are just as valuable and challenging to achieve as the attraction of new companies,” said Marianela Urgellés, General Director of CINDE.
Nilo Caravaca, Vice President of Operations for several Hologic sites including Costa Rica, emphasized the company’s commitment to Costa Rica. “Hologic began operations in Costa Rica more than two decades ago and since then, we have been in constant growth. First, we moved from Cartago to Coyol in Alajuela and then, little by little, we began diversifying our portfolio of medical device manufacturing and services for the company. Today, we are excited about the opening of the Cybersecurity Operations Center, which will play a key role in the company's global cybersecurity strategy. This investment made by Hologic, in terms of the setup of the SOC and the hiring, as well as developing of local talent, will help us continue to fulfill our promise of The Science of Sure,” he said.
Establishing the Cybersecurity Operations Center in Costa Rica will also allow Hologic to expand its capabilities and staff in the areas of governance, risk and compliance, as well as third-party risk management (TPRM).
